Auto Rickshaw Fares Surge in Karnataka Following Bike Taxi Ban
Bengaluru, June 18, 2025 — Following the Karnataka government’s recent ban on bike taxi services across the state, particularly targeting popular app-based platforms like Rapido and Ola Bike, auto rickshaw fares have seen a sharp increase, sparking concerns among daily commuters.
The bike taxi ban, which was justified by the government citing regulatory and safety concerns, has left a significant gap in last-mile connectivity and affordable transportation options, especially in urban centers like Bengaluru. As a result, auto drivers have capitalized on the sudden demand, hiking fares beyond the usual rates — with some reportedly charging up to double the standard fare during peak hours.
Passenger Woes Multiply
For commuters who previously depended on economical and quick bike rides to navigate traffic-heavy routes, the fare hike in autos has come as a double blow. “I used to pay ₹40 for a 5 km Rapido ride, but now auto drivers are demanding ₹100–₹120 for the same distance,” said Megha R., a college student in Bengaluru.
No Clarity on Regulation Yet
The Transport Department has yet to announce any new fare regulation for auto rickshaws following the ban. Officials say enforcement teams are monitoring the situation, but commuter grievances continue to pile up. Many have taken to social media to report overcharging and demand fare regulation and transparency.
Drivers Justify Hike
On the other side, auto rickshaw drivers argue that rising fuel prices and longer idle times due to increased traffic congestion justify the increased rates. “Bike taxis were taking away our business. Now we have more rides, but fuel is costly and waiting time has increased. The fares have to match the effort,” said Anwar Pasha, an auto driver from Shivajinagar.
Call for Alternative Solutions
Urban mobility experts are urging the state to re-evaluate the ban and instead regulate the bike taxi ecosystem to ensure commuter affordability and safety. Until then, citizens are left with fewer choices, increased travel expenses, and longer commute times.
As the debate continues, the state government faces mounting pressure to provide alternative mobility solutions and curb the unregulated fare hikes currently impacting thousands across Karnataka.
