The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a major update that affects lawful permanent residents applying to replace their Green Cards. Beginning May 29, 2025, only the 01/20/25 edition of Form I-90 will be accepted for green card replacement applications.
Form I-90 is used by green card holders to renew or replace their Permanent Resident Card, a document that confirms their legal status in the U.S. Although some green cards don’t have expiration dates, most are valid for 10 years, while conditional green cards are valid for 2 years.
What’s Changing?
- Form Update: The 01/20/25 edition of Form I-90 becomes mandatory from May 29, 2025. The 04/01/24 edition will no longer be accepted.
- Consistency Requirement: All pages of the submitted form must be from the same edition. Mismatched or missing pages may result in form rejection.
- Filing Methods: Applicants can file either online or by mail.
- Online Filing Fee: $415
- Paper Filing Fee: $465
Key Reminders for Applicants:
- Ensure your green card is valid and renew it if it’s expired or expiring within 6 months.
- Use the USCIS Naturalization Eligibility Tool to check if you qualify for U.S. citizenship before applying for a green card replacement.
- Conditional residents cannot use Form I-90. Instead:
- File Form I-751 (if green card was through marriage)
- File Form I-829 (if green card was through investment)
Green card holders must always carry a valid, unexpired card or equivalent proof of residency—even when applying for naturalization. This update emphasizes USCIS’s ongoing efforts to streamline documentation and enhance application accuracy.
