New Delhi: Starting June 30, 2025, UPI users on platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM will see a major change in how payment details are displayed—aimed at enhancing trust and reducing fraud.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a circular mandating that UPI applications must show the verified (ultimate) beneficiary name, as recorded in the bank’s Core Banking System (CBS), before and after a transaction is made.
Key Changes Announced by NPCI:
- Display Only the Verified Name:
For all person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2PM) transactions, UPI apps must show only the bank-verified name (CBS name) of the recipient on the pre-transaction confirmation screen.- This name will be fetched through the Validate Address API.
- Any alternative names (like QR code names or saved nicknames) will no longer be shown.
- No User Editing of Beneficiary Names:
UPI apps must disable user ability to edit or rename the beneficiary on their interface during or before payment. This step is to ensure users do not get misled by altered identifiers.
According to NPCI, these changes are crucial to improve user confidence in the UPI system and minimize errors and fraud. Apps failing to comply with these rules after June 30, 2025, will be treated as non-compliant.
This move is expected to bring greater transparency and help customers verify the recipient before hitting “Send”—a much-needed update in the fast-growing digital payments space.
