On Saturday, India experienced a widespread outage affecting the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), disrupting online payment services and causing widespread inconvenience for users across the country. Popular UPI apps like Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe, and others were significantly impacted, with users reporting issues in transferring money, making bill payments, and checking account balances.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI operations, acknowledged the technical difficulties and confirmed that “partial” transaction declines were a result of the server issues. While some users could still access their account balances, many could not complete their UPI transactions.
The outage created significant challenges for people who rely on UPI for daily transactions, including local shopping and money transfers. Several customers expressed frustration on social media platforms, where the disruption was widely discussed. Monitoring websites tracking real-time outages also reported that UPI apps such as Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe were experiencing downtime during the server issues.
In response, NPCI posted an update on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating that they were actively working to resolve the issue. “We are facing intermittent technical issues leading to partial UPI transaction declines,” the statement said. “We regret the inconvenience caused and are working to resolve the matter.”
