Kochi: Kerala’s railway network is set for a major boost as authorities work on increasing train speeds on the Ernakulam-Shoranur route. The modernization of the signaling system is in its final phase, while track realignment efforts are also in progress to eliminate curves that currently slow down trains.

At present, Vande Bharat Express trains, which have the potential to run at 160 km/h, are restricted to just 80 km/h due to track limitations. The curved sections of the route prevent them from reaching higher speeds. However, once the track realignment and new signaling system are implemented, train speeds on this corridor will see a significant improvement.

Third Railway Track in the Works

A major step towards enhancing train services is the completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a third railway track between Ernakulam and Shoranur. This proposed track will be designed to accommodate speeds of up to 160 km/h, significantly reducing travel time for passengers.

Modernized Signaling to Boost Efficiency

The upgraded signaling system will also enhance train frequency on this busy route. Currently, a train must cover 8 km after departing a station before another train can be allowed on the same track. The new system will reduce this distance to just 2 km, allowing more trains to operate efficiently and reducing congestion.

Passenger Benefits

These upgrades are expected to result in faster travel times, improved connectivity, and more frequent train services across Kerala, making railway travel smoother and more efficient for passengers.
