Kamal Haasan, known for his bold cinematic choices and political sharpness, has previously backed down from controversy surrounding his film titles. Years ago, he reportedly changed the name of one of his films after receiving no support from former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa during a politically sensitive period.

Now, a similar scenario is unfolding with his upcoming film Thug Life. The title has drawn fire from Tamil Nadu’s political circles, particularly from Dr. K. Krishnasamy, founder of the Puthiya Tamilagam party.

Krishnasamy strongly objected to the film’s title, arguing that the word “thug” historically referred to violent criminals and gangsters, especially the infamous “Thugs and Pindaris” of the 18th and 19th centuries. He criticized the use of the term, claiming it risks glorifying lawlessness and anti-social behavior, which could negatively influence the public.

The controversy echoes Haasan’s past experience when political pressure forced him to reconsider a film’s branding. As public discourse over the title heats up, it remains to be seen whether Thug Life will retain its name or undergo a revision in light of political sensitivities.
