Cyclonic Circulations Trigger Widespread Rain and Thunderstorm Alerts: IMD Forecasts Unstable Weather Till May 11
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread rainfall and thunderstorm alert across various parts of India, driven by the formation of five cyclonic circulations across the subcontinent. The warnings remain in effect through May 11, covering the Northwest, Central, and Northeast regions, with lightning and gusty winds also expected.
According to the IMD, the five active weather systems are:
- A Western Disturbance over West Madhya Pradesh
- An upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh
- A trough extending from the northeast Arabian Sea to West Madhya Pradesh
- An upper air cyclonic circulation over Northeast Assam
- Another upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal
🌧️ States Under Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts:
- Northwest India: Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh
- Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat
- Northeast India: Assam and surrounding regions
- South India: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana
These areas will witness moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds until the weekend. A thundersquall is also likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert in some states, including Delhi, due to potential strong winds and dust storms.
🔥 Heatwave Alerts Issued:
Even as rains lash parts of the country, a heatwave is likely in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand till May 13. Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions will persist in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe.
🌦️ Monsoon Outlook:
Looking ahead, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to advance into the South Andaman Sea, Southeast Bay of Bengal, and Nicobar Islands around May 13, potentially marking the early onset of the seasonal rains.
The IMD advises residents in affected areas to remain alert, follow safety protocols during thunderstorms, and take precautions against the heat.
