- Gulmarg Fashion Show Sparks Ou ...

A fashion show held in Gulmarg has sparked widespread controversy in Jammu and Kashmir, with political and religious leaders condemning the event for being insensitive during the holy month of Ramzan. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has demanded a report within 24 hours and assured that appropriate action will follow.
“The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this sacred month,” Abdullah stated.
The fashion show, organized on Friday against the scenic backdrop of Gulmarg’s snow-covered slopes, marked the 15th anniversary of designer label Shivan & Narresh. However, it quickly became a subject of public outrage.
Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, strongly criticized the event, calling it “outrageous” and “obscene.” In a post on X, he wrote, “That such an event was held during Ramzan is shocking. Kashmir, known for its Sufi and saintly traditions, cannot tolerate such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion.”
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also criticized the timing of the event, stating, “As a liberal-minded individual, I believe in mutual respect and coexistence. But this was not the right time for such a show.”
Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi went a step further, calling it a “cultural invasion disguised as tourism” and demanding action against both the Tourism Department officials and the event’s organizers, Shivan & Narresh.
With growing outrage, the government’s response in the coming days will be closely watched.
