Dharavi Transformation Project Advances With Over 94,500 Tenants Registered and 70,000 Home Surveys Completed
Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government, announced significant progress in the much-awaited Dharavi Redevelopment Project. As of April 13, more than 94,500 tenants have been assigned unique identification numbers, and surveys have been completed for nearly 70,000 homes.
Over 1 lakh structures have also been physically mapped in one of the world’s largest urban renewal projects. The initiative aims to revamp Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slum clusters, into a modern residential and commercial space.
Clarification on Affidavits and Eligibility
NMDPL addressed recent media concerns about the collection of affidavits from ground-floor residents, denying any forced collection attempts. The company emphasized that affidavits are being gathered in line with a Government Resolution (GR) dated October 4, 2024, to determine eligibility of upper-floor occupants.
Upper-floor residents are required to provide proof of occupancy through documents such as electricity bills, rent agreements, Aadhaar, ration cards, passports indicating floor numbers, or certified affidavits.
Housing Options for Ineligible Residents
Residents deemed ineligible for free rehabilitation will not be left out. They will be provided with 300 sq ft homes at a nominal cost in locations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Payments can be made over a 12-year period, or as a lump sum for early ownership.
Timeline & Project Scope
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is being executed under a 17-year master plan, with NMDPL committed to completing all rehabilitation housing within seven years. Each eligible resident is entitled to a 350 sq ft home, irrespective of the number of tenements occupied.
Project Background
Awarded in 2022, the redevelopment contract saw the Adani Group pledge ₹5,069 crore as an initial investment. This project is being hailed as a pivotal step toward making Mumbai slum-free, transforming the city’s urban landscape with state-of-the-art housing and infrastructure.
