India-China Border Talks Ongoing, Dispute ‘Complex and Time-Consuming’: Beijing Responds to Rajnath Singh

Amid renewed diplomatic engagement, China has responded to India’s call for a “permanent solution” to the prolonged boundary issue, saying the dispute is “complex” and will “take time to settle.” This comes days after Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged for progress during his meeting with his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave in Qingdao on June 26.

Reacting to Singh’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning acknowledged that the border dispute is longstanding and intricate. She emphasized the existence of multiple diplomatic and military-level communication mechanisms, including the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism and the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles.

“The boundary question is complicated and it takes time to settle,” Mao stated. “The positive aspect is that both sides are in regular contact through established mechanisms.”

Mao also underlined China’s willingness to continue dialogue on delimitation negotiations and border management, calling for joint efforts to maintain peace and stability along the frontier.

Rajnath Singh, during the bilateral meeting, stressed the importance of managing the border effectively and reviving existing mechanisms to pursue a permanent resolution. He also highlighted the need to foster friendly conditions for mutual benefit and regional stability.

This interaction is part of continued efforts by both nations to reduce tensions post the 2020 eastern Ladakh standoff, including the Galwan Valley clashes. Despite 23 rounds of SR-level talks, a final resolution has remained elusive. The latest round was held in December 2024 between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Singh’s remarks indicate a shift in India’s stance from seeking an “early resolution” to pushing for a lasting and final settlement of the border demarcation.
