CBI Arrests CGST Superintendent in Bribery Case, Unearths Crores in Undisclosed Assets

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) superintendent, Nishan Singh Malli, posted in Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh to waive off penalties imposed on a private firm.

The arrest was made during a trap operation set up after the complainant, a businessman, approached the CBI. According to the agency, Malli had initially demanded ₹4 lakh in collusion with tax lawyer Amit Khandelwal, who was representing the businessman in the matter.

“The tax advocate and the CGST officer conspired to extort ₹4 lakh from the businessman for waiving off GST penalties. The accused were caught red-handed accepting ₹1 lakh as the first installment,” a CBI spokesperson said.

Following the arrest, the CBI conducted extensive searches at Malli’s premises and discovered assets disproportionate to known sources of income.

Properties & Cash Seized

The agency seized 17 property documents registered in the names of Malli and his family members, including:

  • Three residential flats in Ghaziabad and Moradabad
  • One commercial shop in Moradabad
  • Twelve residential plots in Rampur and Gajraula
  • One Hyundai Creta vehicle registered in his name

Additionally, the CBI recovered ₹3 lakh in cash, including the bribe amount, from the officer’s residence. Documents relevant to the ongoing investigation were also seized from his official office.

Court Proceedings

Both Malli and Khandelwal were produced before a special CBI court in Ghaziabad, which remanded them to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and further scrutiny of seized documents is underway.

“This case highlights the urgent need for vigilance and accountability in tax administration,” the spokesperson added.
