Bengaluru Faces Massive Delay in Power Connections Due to Bescom’s New Occupancy Certificate Rule

Bengaluru is witnessing a significant backlog of power connection requests after Bescom made it mandatory to submit an Occupancy Certificate (OC) for all new buildings seeking electricity connections. Nearly 50,000 applications remain pending as per the latest data from the Energy Department, almost two months after the rule came into effect.

The new regulation, aimed at ensuring compliance and safety, has inadvertently stalled power supply approvals, affecting homeowners, builders, and residents across the city. Many applicants are facing extended waiting times as they await the issuance of their OCs from respective municipal authorities.

Bescom’s decision was intended to streamline connection processes and prevent illegal hookups but has instead created a bottleneck due to delays in certificate issuance.

The authorities are now under pressure to expedite OC approvals and revisit processes to ease the growing backlog and provide timely electricity connections to the public.
