For many long-time Bengaluru residents, the city’s rapid development feels overwhelming, with multiple large-scale projects unfolding simultaneously. The Namma Metro extension plans to connect neighbouring cities, construction has begun on a suburban rail network, and the state government is actively promoting a controversial network of tunnel roads to ease the notorious traffic congestion. Meanwhile, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is being divided into multiple smaller corporations, aiming to improve civic management.
Despite these forward-looking initiatives, the everyday realities for many citizens remain grim. The city’s rapid growth has brought with it a host of persistent problems that seem sidelined in the grand planning. When the rains pour, Bengaluru’s vulnerabilities are starkly revealed—dangerous waterlogged roads trap motorists, entire layouts face flooding, and tragic incidents like deaths caused by submerged underpasses or falling trees continue to haunt residents.
Promises from ministers to remove encroachments feel repetitive and ineffective to those living through these hardships, casting a shadow over the glossy image of ‘Brand Bengaluru.’ As the city strives for modernization and expansion, addressing these fundamental issues remains a critical challenge.
