BCCI Appeals to Virat Kohli to Return to Test Cricket—RCB’s IPL Fate Could Influence His Decision
Even as the cricketing world continues to come to terms with Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket, the BCCI has not given up hope. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has publicly urged Kohli to reconsider his retirement, especially if Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinch their first-ever IPL title in 2025.
In a heartfelt statement, Dhumal likened Kohli’s cricketing legacy to tennis icons Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, citing his unmatched fitness and passion even after 18 IPL seasons. “Virat is the greatest ambassador for cricket,” Dhumal said, calling for a Test comeback driven by national sentiment and unfinished legacy.
Kohli has already stepped away from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, leaving fans with only ODIs and the IPL to witness his on-field brilliance. With RCB on the verge of making history, speculation is growing that Kohli may hang up his boots completely if the team lifts the trophy.
“Even if RCB wins, I hope he continues,” said Dhumal. “Given the energy and discipline he brings to the game, he could play for many more years.”
🧢 Shubman Gill’s Rise as India’s New Test Captain
Dhumal also threw his weight behind Shubman Gill, India’s newly appointed Test captain, praising the youngster’s leadership during recent assignments with Gujarat Titans and India’s tour of Zimbabwe. “He’s got age, talent, and composure on his side. The future is bright,” Dhumal noted.
As India transitions into a new era of Test cricket, the absence of Kohli at No. 4 will be deeply felt. But the door, it seems, is not entirely closed — especially if the RCB dream run sparks a rethink.
