Bangalore to Wayanad via Kabini: Route Update, Road Quality, and Travel Tips
If you’re planning a scenic road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad via Kabini and Nagarhole, here’s an important update that can help you navigate better and avoid delays.
We kicked off our trip with an early morning departure, intending to travel through Nagarhole Forest to Kutta, visit Kuruva Island, and reach our resort in Mananthavady. Everything went smoothly until we reached the Nagarhole forest check post—only to be informed that the route to Kutta was closed for roadwork for the next week.
Detour through Kabini & Tibetan Settlement
Following instructions from forest officials, we rerouted via the Tibetan Settlement, continuing through Handpost and finally arriving at Kabini before reaching our destination.
The stretch from Hunsur to the Nagarhole check post was generally good, especially near the forest arch where new roadwork was evident—an encouraging sign for future travelers. The alternate route through the Tibetan Settlement was charming and scenic, though it was narrow in parts.
Road Conditions: A Mixed Bag
However, once past the Settlement, the road quality began to deteriorate. The stretch leading to the Bavali check post through the forest ranged from average to poor. In some areas, potholes dominated the road, with brief patches of tar or even just rubble. On the upside, signs of upcoming repairs were visible—equipment, construction materials, and compacted gravel indicate roadwork will likely begin soon.
Return Route: No Surprises
For the return journey, we opted for the more conventional route via Sulthan Bathery – Muthanga – Gundlupete – and the Bangalore-Mysore Highway. This route remains smooth and reliable with no new developments to report.
Travel Tips:
- Check Forest Route Status: Always confirm road status with local authorities before entering forest areas.
- Avoid Nagarhole to Kutta (for now): Due to ongoing repairs, choose alternate routes until the road reopens.
- Scenic Detours: The Tibetan Settlement and Kabini area are worth the detour despite the narrow roads.
- Drive Carefully: Expect rough patches and drive slowly through forest stretches.
