ACT Fibernet, the Bengaluru-based internet service provider known for pioneering fibre-to-the-home in India, is pushing the boundaries of home connectivity with its latest innovation: Smart WiFi, powered by its proprietary Zippy operating system. This AI-enhanced technology is designed to intelligently manage bandwidth across devices and applications, ensuring smoother, faster, and more consistent internet performance at home.

“Just like a smartphone gets smarter with software updates, we’ve upgraded our routers with AI capabilities via the Zippy OS,” said Ravi Karthik, Chief Marketing Officer at ACT Fibernet. The AI-enhanced firmware constantly scans a user’s environment and tailors bandwidth distribution based on whether a device is streaming, gaming, or browsing.

To bring this concept to life, ACT collaborated with Saatchi & Saatchi to launch a creative campaign featuring ‘Zippy’, a mascot that symbolizes enhanced WiFi performance. The campaign visually represents Zippy entering a router and eliminating connectivity issues—an engaging metaphor for the new intelligent system.

Solving Real-World Internet Frustrations

The innovation targets two of the most common complaints from users: WiFi dead zones and buffering during high-bandwidth activities like streaming. Market research indicated these as top concerns for ACT’s core audience—digitally savvy households with multiple connected devices.

Rather than taking a blanket approach, ACT is targeting streaming enthusiasts, remote professionals, and smart homes through platforms like connected TVs, YouTube, and Instagram. Influencers are also playing a key role in educating users about the benefits of Smart WiFi.

Competing in a Crowded Market

In a broadband landscape increasingly dominated by telecom giants like Airtel and Jio, ACT is choosing to stand out not through aggressive bundling or pricing, but by focusing on customer experience and reliable service.

While it does partner with OTT platforms like Netflix, Zee, and Sony, ACT prefers to highlight service quality over content bundles. As Karthik puts it, “Standalone broadband is a need by itself.”

Strategy for Growth

ACT’s current subscriber base stands at 2.3 million, significantly smaller than Airtel (7 million) and Jio (10 million), yet the brand holds a leadership position in southern markets and is growing steadily in cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Lucknow.

The company’s pricing starts at ₹559/month for 50 Mbps, slightly higher than Jio and Airtel’s entry-level plans. However, ACT bets on superior performance and fewer service disruptions as its long-term advantage.

A key insight driving its Smart WiFi push is the increase in connected devices per household—from 2-3 pre-pandemic to 6-15 today. During the first 15 days of rollout across 250,000 homes, ACT reports a 3X average speed boost on all devices.

With category penetration still at only 10–15%, ACT Fibernet believes that the broadband market in India has immense room for growth—and it’s betting big on AI and user experience to lead the charge.
