The highly anticipated Bengaluru-Chennai Greenfield Expressway is in its final stages of construction and is set to drastically reduce travel time between the two cities from six hours to under three. Spanning 260 km across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, this expressway will be South India’s first access-controlled greenfield highway, boosting connectivity and economic development in the region.
Final Construction Push After Temple Relocation
The last 400-meter stretch of the expressway in Karnataka faced delays due to a temple along the route. However, with its successful relocation, construction has resumed near Jinnagara Cross, Hoskote. According to Vilas P Brahmankar, Regional Officer of NHAI Bengaluru, this final section is expected to be completed by the end of the month, allowing seamless movement within Karnataka.
High-Speed Travel & Expansion Plans
Built at an estimated cost of ₹17,900 crore, the expressway is currently a four-lane highway, with provisions to expand to eight lanes in the future. Designed for high-speed travel with a limit of 120 km/h, the expressway will feature key interchanges at Hoskote, Malur, and KGF, enhancing connectivity for both commuters and businesses.
Karnataka Section: Route Breakdown
The Karnataka stretch is divided into three major segments:
- Package 1: Hoskote to Malur – 27.1 km
- Package 2: Malur to Bangarpet – 27.1 km
- Package 3: Bangarpet to Bethamangala – 17.5 km
This section will also offer direct access to the upcoming multi-modal logistics park at Dobbspet, strengthening supply chains and trade networks.
Full Expressway Expected by 2025
While the Karnataka portion is almost complete, construction in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu has encountered delays. Originally scheduled for completion by March 2024, the full expressway is now expected to be fully operational by 2025. Until then, Karnataka commuters can already enjoy significant travel improvements within the state.
