Japan issued an emergency alert on Saturday after North Korea launched what is believed to be a ballistic missile, prompting the government in Tokyo to activate crisis monitoring protocols.

The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the development through an alert posted on social media, stating that a suspected ballistic missile had been launched from North Korea and that further updates would follow as authorities assessed the situation.

Emergency Response Activated

Following the alert, the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister who secured a decisive victory in the February 2026 general elections, quickly activated emergency response procedures.

Officials began tracking the missile’s trajectory and coordinating with defence and security agencies to determine any potential threat to Japanese territory.

Missile Fell Outside Japan’s EEZ

According to Japan’s Coast Guard, the suspected ballistic missile was launched around 1:30 pm local time, based on information from the country’s defence ministry.

Authorities later indicated that the projectile likely landed in waters outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), suggesting that the immediate threat to Japanese territory had passed.

Kyodo News cited government sources confirming that the missile appeared to have fallen beyond the EEZ, and no damage has been reported so far.

Regional Monitoring Intensifies

The launch was also detected by the South Korean military, which reported that North Korea fired at least one unidentified projectile toward the east.

The missile test comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, particularly as the United States and South Korea are conducting their annual joint spring military exercises, which Pyongyang often criticises.

Ships Warned to Stay Alert

Following the launch, Japan’s Coast Guard issued a warning to vessels operating in nearby waters, urging them to remain vigilant and monitor updates regarding the missile’s trajectory.

Pattern of Military Demonstrations

This latest launch follows a series of similar missile tests carried out by North Korea earlier in the year.

In January, Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, which were also assessed to have landed outside Japan’s EEZ.

Japanese authorities have convened an emergency team at the Prime Minister’s crisis management centre to monitor developments and coordinate responses with defence agencies.

The missile launch has once again raised concerns about regional security in East Asia as tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula.
