Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a devastating multi-vehicle accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district and announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a message posted on the official X handle of the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi described the incident as “extremely painful” and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

As per the announcement, the next of kin of each deceased victim will receive ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF, while those injured in the accident will be provided ₹50,000 each as financial assistance.

Details of the Accident

The tragic mishap occurred on Tuesday morning near Milestone 127, close to the Baldev police station on the Yamuna Expressway. According to officials, at least 11 vehicles were involved in the collision, following which a massive fire engulfed 10 of them.

Fire and rescue teams rushed to the spot, with nearly 14 fire tenders deployed to control the blaze, which took several hours to extinguish. Traffic movement on the Agra–Noida stretch of the expressway was disrupted for nearly four hours before being restored after rescue operations concluded.

Death Toll Rises to 13

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed that the death toll in the accident has risen to 13. Among the identified victims are individuals from Prayagraj, Gonda, and Azamgarh. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining deceased.

Around 60 injured passengers have been admitted to various hospitals in the district and are currently undergoing treatment.

Identification of Victims Underway

Mathura Chief Medical Officer Dr Radha Vallabh stated that medical teams have been deployed to identify the bodies using DNA sampling, as several victims were badly charred due to the fire.

He added that post-mortem examinations are currently underway and that the final count of bodies will be confirmed only after the official panchnama process is completed. The entire medical staff has been mobilised to handle the emergency and assist families of the victims.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident while relief and identification efforts remain in progress.
