Team India has been handed a 10% match-fee fine by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the side was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the second ODI against South Africa. The match, which India lost by 4 wickets, allowed the Proteas to level the series 1-1 before India eventually sealed the ODI series 2-1 in the decider.
ICC Sanction Explained
The penalty was imposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. India was ruled to be two overs short of the required number within the allotted time frame.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined 5% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl on time. With India two overs behind, the total fine amounted to 10%.
KL Rahul Accepts the Charge
There was no formal hearing required because India’s stand-in ODI captain KL Rahul accepted the charge and agreed to the sanction.
The charge was officially levelled by:
- On-field umpires Rod Tucker and Rohan Pandit
- Third umpire Sam Nogajski
- Fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal
India Bounce Back in ODI Series
After being whitewashed in the Test series, India bounced back strongly in ODIs. A dominant performance in the third ODI in Visakhapatnam saw the hosts bowl out South Africa for 270 and chase the target with ease.
Key highlights from the final ODI:
- Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a century
- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli contributed with solid half-centuries
- India won by nine wickets, taking the series 2-1
