Speeding Ambulance Runs Red Light, Kills Couple on Scooter in Bengaluru’s Richmond Circle

A tragic accident unfolded late Saturday night in Bengaluru when a speeding ambulance jumped a red signal at Richmond Circle and crashed into several two-wheelers waiting at the stoplight, killing a couple on the spot.

The incident occurred around 11:00 pm, when multiple motorists had halted at the signal. Witnesses said the ambulance lost control while speeding and rammed into three motorcycles from behind, dragging one of them several metres before crashing into a police outpost.

The victims have been identified as Ismail (40) and his wife Sameen Banu, who were riding a Honda Dio scooter. Both died instantly due to the impact. Two other riders sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Eyewitness videos circulating online show bystanders attempting to lift the overturned ambulance and move the damaged vehicles. Several motorcycles were seen mangled near the police outpost, highlighting the force of the collision.

Police Investigation

The Wilson Garden Traffic Police promptly reached the spot and conducted an inspection. The ambulance driver, identified as Ashok, has been taken into custody, and an FIR has been registered against him.

Police are investigating whether the ambulance was responding to an emergency call at the time or was being driven negligently. Preliminary findings suggest overspeeding and signal violation led to the fatal crash.

Authorities have also initiated an inquiry into the vehicle’s fitness and whether proper safety protocols were followed during its operation.

The incident has sparked outrage among Bengaluru residents, who are questioning the safety norms and reckless driving of emergency vehicles in the city. Many on social media expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives and urged stricter enforcement of traffic rules.

One resident wrote, “Ambulances are meant to save lives, not take them. Bengaluru’s roads have become death traps — time for strict accountability.”
