New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reiterated that ₹2000 denomination notes continue to be legal tender, even though they are no longer actively issued or accepted for deposit at commercial banks. As per the latest figures released by the RBI on June 3, 2025, notes worth ₹6,181 crore are still in circulation—two years after the initial withdrawal notification.

The central bank had announced the phased withdrawal of ₹2000 notes on May 19, 2023, when approximately ₹3.56 lakh crore worth of such notes were in use. Since then, about 98.26% of those notes have returned to the system.

🏦 Where Can You Deposit ₹2000 Notes Now?

Although commercial banks stopped accepting ₹2000 notes on October 7, 2023, the RBI clarified that these notes can still be:

  • Deposited or exchanged at 19 designated issue offices of the RBI.
  • Sent by post (via India Post) to RBI offices for credit to your bank account.

This option allows people who still hold ₹2000 notes to safely get them back into the formal banking system.

⚠️ Not Banned, Just Phased Out

The ₹2000 note is not banned—it remains legal tender. However, the RBI has stopped printing and circulating new ₹2000 notes and urges the public to return or deposit any that remain.

This move is part of RBI’s ongoing currency management strategy to encourage the use of lower denomination notes and enhance transparency in currency circulation.
